Episode notes · A written companion

Faith in the middle of family life.

An editorial summary by Beacons of Sophia’s conversation, prepared using the episode’s captions. These are selected themes, not a word-for-word transcript or a contributor-written testimony. Watch the full episode for context.

01A faith that grew through change

Sophia grew up around Christianity in South Africa, but describes a long, uneven journey towards a more personal faith. Moving to Australia, joining a church and later choosing baptism became important parts of that journey. She speaks honestly about continuing difficulties rather than presenting faith as a life without struggle.

02Finding support in a painful season

During the breakdown of her marriage, Sophia describes a serious period of emotional distress. Prayer, returning to church, Bible study and relationships with other Christians became sources of hope for her. She also reflects on learning to step back from anger and the desire to control what happened next. Her account is personal testimony, not a treatment plan or a promise that another person’s circumstances will unfold the same way.

03Faith in ordinary family routines

Sophia talks about prayer at bedtime, saying grace and discussing faith with her children. Her aim is not to appear perfect: she acknowledges making mistakes and wants them to see what she genuinely believes. She recognises that, as they grow, they will make choices she cannot make for them. Building a foundation and being available to support them matter to her.

04Quiet moments and growing wisdom

Prayer in the car, while running and over a morning coffee helps Sophia make space for God within everyday life. She describes the importance of reducing phone distractions when reading Scripture. Proverbs 8 and James 1:5 stand out in her reflections on asking for wisdom, making decisions and deepening her relationship with God.

Something to sit with

After the conversation.

What small, realistic moment could you make room for prayer—and who could support you in the parts of family life you cannot carry on your own?
